What is your skin type?
Normal: If you are one of the very lucky ones with normal skin, your face should look and feel healthy and have a fairly good balance without much taking care of it. Do you naturally have great looking skin? Chances are this is your skin type. You will still benefit (everyone will!) from taking care of your skin properly, of course! So even if you got the glass slipper, try it anyways and see if you don't feel/see a difference.
Oily: With oily skin, you will be able to feel/see excess oil all on your face - and be able to see the oil spots when you wipe it down. A good facial routine is important because this type of skin can appear to have larger pores and be more prone to breakouts.
Dry: Dry skin will often feel tight and flaky. You probably have moreso of a dull tone than any of the other skin types, as well. This facial routine catered to your specific needs is important because dry skin see the signs of aging faster than any other skin type.
Combination: Combination skin has some of the characteristics of both dry and oily in certain areas of the face. It will be more dry around the eyes and cheeks, but oily around the t-zone. This is actually the most common skin type among women.
Sensitive: Sensitive skin can become irritated very easily and is typically very dry. The skin can become itchy and flaky, and you MUST do a very good amount of digging to find good products for your routine moreso than any other type, but it's also quite a bit more important to take care of your skin properly, however - as you have the most problematic of all skin types.
If you are still unsure about your skin type, a good way to find out is to head to a Clinique counter. They can also help you pick out products for a good facial routine catered to your needs. Keep in mind, though - you DO NOT have to buy anything they are selling - you can always keep a similar product in mind and go buy it elsewhere. You could also talk to a dermatologist, who should also be able to tell you what your skin needs.
The Steps
Step One – At night, take off your makeup!
Sounds basic, huh? When you take off your makeup – you aren't just taking off your visible makeup, you are helping to take off a days worth of dirt and yucky. Your skin needs oxygen to be able to breathe and look it's best. It can't do that with a thick layer of foundation (or dirt) clogging up your pores. Not removing makeup can also lead to dull looking skin, which is what this EXACTLY what this daily regime is trying to avoid. Sleep easier knowing your face is thanking you for letting it breath and becoming more vibrant from practically no effort but getting all that junk off. Even if you don't follow the next four steps, your skin will be in much better shape just from following this step.
Step Two – Wash Your Face!
Washing your face seems pretty basic, too – but you'd be surprised at how many people just skip over it What's the benefit of washing your skin? For one, it helps control acne and breakouts by reducing clogged pores. Secondly, it goes further with the cleaning process (that your makeup removal started), and cleans deep down to get rid of the dirt and nasty you've picked up over the day. DO NOT use a body soap (such as bar soap) on your face. A good product is Estee Lauder Soft Clean – you only need to use a bit to get the job done, and it lasts forever!
Step Three – Exfoliate!
You're going to want to do this 2-4 times a week for best results (you should do so at night), but really how often depends on your skin type (see section above) and age. If you're 35 and under, your skin should be able to handle more (3-4 times) – but if you're 36 or older, try to just stick with the bare minimum amount a week (1-2) so that it's more beneficial (or if you have dry skin). Those over 35 and/or with dry/sensitive skin should also use a more gentle exfoliant (reason: the more oily your skin is, the more exfoliant you can handle – you lose oil In your skin the older you get so as you age you shouldn't do it as much, or if you have dry skin since you don't have much oil to begin with). You shouldn't OVERDO this at all, though, as it can lead to skin damage. Exfoliating speeds up the process of desquamation, which is the shedding of the outermost layer of skin, thus leaving room for the new skin cells to appear making your skin look and feel soft and absolutely amazing.

Step Four – Toner!
Using a Toner restores your skins PH back to normal, helps get rid of any previous cleansing residue, and helps step five (moisturizer) penetrate faster without clogging your pores. There is a toner for all types of skin – be sure to get the one for you (dry, combination, whatever you need!) Using a toner can also minimize the appearance of pores and help your skin become 'refreshed', so why wouldn't you use a toner is the question? Beats me either! It's a very important step in getting the most out of your daily regime.
Step Five – Moisturizer!
Moisturizing is an essential key to 'slow down' the aging process for our face as it combats wrinkles by keeping your skin hydrated, and not dry. Keeping your body hydrated is one of the most important things we as humans can do, your face is no different...the added bonus is it also makes your skin look radiant BECAUSE it's keeping your skin supple and quenched. Moisturizer is especially important in modern times, when skin can lose its natural moisture thanks to pollution. Think of it as a personal warrior that is shielding you from the bad going around in the air. Your skin will thank you for using this – a week, a month, a year...twenty years down the road. This is the most essential thing you can do to keep your skin looking and being as healthy as possible!
BONUS STEP - Sunscreen. All the time.
Not only should you wear sunscreen at the beach, or when you're in the sun all the time in order to prevent sunburn...but you should wear it daily. The sun causes pre-mature aging and wrinkles and, really, who wants that? Some celebrities even wear it INSIDE in order to prevent the suns damage to the skin. One way to make the most out of it is to wear a moisturizer with SPF in the morning, and apply as needed throughout the day. Spending a few seconds putting this on can save you years of damage to your face!
